today is the day after…well the day after we held our weekly service in the parking lot. the set up takes all day to tackle…a trailer and portable staging, sound system, light trees, hundreds of chairs, tables, an 8′ x 8′ graffiti wall, a coke trailer, 480 hot dogs to grill, a rock-wall, a joust, portable skate park, oodles of garbage cans…not sure what an oodle is but it sounds like a bunch…

more students showed up than we had dragged out sedating for…
the night started with DB banging and screaming out some tunes…
Pastor Jon, Allen griffin and myself worked the crowd, threw out t-shirts and pushed the next event…
Clarence…aka JR walker – i called him jd walker from the stage…rapped with a guest appearance from JP…
Our 2 worship teams combined for worship…
The graffiti wall was a hit the entire night…students tagged it and tagged it again!
The message was all about…leave your mark…we need to leave a mark on this world!
the close drew 30+ students to come the altar to make a decision for christ…
it was the Largest crowd we have ever had in the parking lot…
Our leadership team turned it out serving in big ways!

When you get over 300 people in an open parking lot…anything can happen an IT happened last night. The night was amazing!

Spring jam 09 is a wrap!

stay in your lane!

January 11, 2009 1 comment

it’s the second sunday of a new year, the atmosphere was rich and the word stuck deep down in my heart. i love it when i am in a service and the words i hear are so clear and life’s so profound that it shakes my life up! it’s moments like these that i write it down and hold onto the powerful word that was spoken over my life…it’s quite simple if God speaks to you, a seed is being planted in your life, but if you don’t hold onto it, something can come and snatch it away! that’s why i take notes…it’s easier to hold onto whatever i hear!

so in the middle of the message pastor jim raley says this “life’s greatest failure is to be successful at the wrong assignment.” come on now! basically find your lane, find your assignment and run the race! it’s so easy to be busy doing the things you want to do, but what about the assignment you are called to do? stay in your lane! you can’t run the race if you are running in someone else’s lane. i think of the olympics when runners that crossed lines were disqualified for not running in their lane…they were fast and they were good, but they failed to stay in their lane. so my big thought for the weekend was “stay in your lane.” i want to live my life in such a way that i never have to look back and see that i succeeded at the wrong assignment. i know my assignment…look out world i am ready…this is my lane!

multimedia and the church

December 18, 2008 2 comments

i read a blog today written by a youth guy and saw where kanye west was on SNL and used LED screen behind him for projection. you can check it out here! this was very creative…i would love to see this in a church! churches that are into the multimedia experience will be sporting LED in the future. i can see a stage that has LED on the floor level, strips that run the stairs the length of the church and even a great backdrop for preachers to preach in front of! preach preacha!

great leaders serve…because thats what leaders do!

today i watched leaders in action…last night we had a great service (really 2 services) and then today the services were turned around for a young adults meeting. i watched as one of our leaders, a behind the scenes kinda guy, showed up early in the day to put all the effort needed to pull off another incredible service. he was the last one to leave…it truly is refreshing to see leaders give with a servants heart! today i also went to a public high school and met with a a group of students at an fca meeting. I got to the room just before class dismissed for lunch and met with the leader of the group. i truly did not know what i was in for, students came in brought lunch and the leader proceeded to pour into the students lives. it is refreshing to see teachers pour into students lives with real passion and real dedication. what a day! lastly i went to a young adults meeting, experienced worship and stood back and watched the flow. i watched as true leaders stepped up and served in various areas, from worship to behind the scenes leaders were busy making everything just right for the moment. that’s when i noticed one guy breaking down some tables and putting away some preservice decor. servanthood…is nothing more than giving…leadership is all about serving! if you are too big to stoop down and serve, then go back and read where Jesus came not to be served but to serve. there aint no one more special than he is, so if you want to lead, then learn how to serve! we have some great leaders here at calvary!

leaders…wacko, weird, wild and wiry peeps!

i am going to dedicate a few posts to the leaders that have been on my team over the years. i have had some interesting people that have showed out in ministry situations…maybe you can relate, or at least start examining who you have on your team. if you don’t inspect what you have, you wont get what you expect!

this first leader was a young adult in his 20’s and to say the least he loved being around students. like many leaders that we attract to youth ministry, some join the team because they have a burden for kids, and others join simply because they want to be a kid and go to theme parks. basically, they want to go on the ride, but they don’t want to hang around after the ride is over. the best way to judge a leaders heart, is after a trip some place. do they stick around till the last kid goes home? do they hang around to pick up all the trash left behind? do they see themselves setting up and tearing down or do they see the kids doing it all? do they want a free ride or are they willing to invest in students lives and make a way possible for students? these should not be tough questions to ask…this guy was in it to the hilt…he would serve in all kinds of areas and had a magnetic personality. basically he was a big kid, until the night of the all night event. all night events will either make or break you in ministry. some people love them others despise them. we went to a theme park in town rode go carts, played laser tag, golf and had a great time with the kids for hours. we chose to stop at a Duncan doughnuts store at 4 am to fill up on sugar before heading back to the church for more fun. it’s an all night event and students will choose to push the limit, if you let them and some students just don’t know when to stop. the chaos ensued on a 15 passenger van (we had 2 go out that night) and the leader was driving with another leader in the passenger seat. This kid was in the back seat throwing nickels at the driver as he drove down the road…now a simple stop throwing nickels did not shake the student he proceeded to chuck nickels at the driver until the driver snapped and said “when i stop this van i am gonna body slam you if you throw one more nickel!” he threw another nickel…when the van stopped at Duncan doughnuts the van i was on was already there walking across the parking lot and a skirmish breaks out…the back door flew open and the student was climbing out of the back to get away from the leader. the next thing i saw was a student flying threw the air full out body slam to the ground. It was something everyone wanted to do to this kid, but nobody ever did. over 10 years ago and i can remember it as if it were yesterday…what do you do when a leader snaps and gets physical with a kid. Not the first time i have seen this happen…just the first time it was one of my peeps.

the student was so shocked he laughed and carried on to cover up his embarrassment and i later talked to the leader about his choice in actions. here is why i remember that night. the next wedensday night the dad met me in the parking lot with a desire to body slam me on the ground. i have never in all my ministry ever had a parent that close to punching my lights out. i have never seen a parent that upset before either. needless to say i was able by the grace of God to calm down the dad and explain to him what ensued up to the point of the leader snapping. the nickel throwing somehow did not make it in the original story dad received. needless to say dad was embarrassed and said he would have done the same.

so what do you do when a leader snaps and slams a student? i chose to use this moment as a mentoring moment for the leader. i sat him down for 3 months and chose to build the leader rather than sweep it under the rug. honestly, it would have been a lot easier to just forget about that night and leave everything as is, but i did not want anyone getting physical again. students will be students, but leaders have to be leaders and that means in responding to kids that push the limits! there will always be some student you would love to body slam, but is that what true leadership is all about! lead by example…
